Fred A. Mayer, 83 of Pittstown, NJ passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.

Born in Kearny, Hudson County, NJ on May 25, 1927, Fred was the son of the late Carl and Edna Roemer Mayer. Fred was married to the late Alice Curtis Mayer and was a resident of Alexandria Township since 1947, previously living in Kearny, NJ until leaving high school to enter the US Navy during WWII where he served onboard the USS New Orleans. After earning his GED he worked for United Advertising, Bowen Engineering and Beacon Illumination. Fred also owned and operated Flemington Sign Company during the late 1950s and more recently The Tool Crib in Pittstown, NJ. He was a member of the Everittstown United Methodist Church, where, for many years, he served on various committees and sang in the choir. He held several positions over the years within Alexandria Township including the Planning Board, Board of Adjustments, COAH Officer and served one term as Mayor. He was a skilled woodworker known for making clocks and antique furniture restoration.

He is survived by his adopted daughter Pamela (Rose) Backes and her husband Richard; grandson Matthew Backes and wife Cecilia, both of Phillipsburg, NJ, two nephews Carl F. Mayer, his wife Julia and children of Branchburg, NJ, Brett J. Mayer and his wife Nellie and children of Colorado Springs, CO. He was predeceased by his brother Marvin Mayer.

Services will be held on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at 11 AM at the Johnson-Walton Funeral Home, 24 Church Rd., Holland Township, NJ. Interment with military honors will follow at Frenchtown Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7 9 PM and Wednesday from 10 11 AM prior to the service at the Funeral Home.
