Frederick Shire, 92, of Holland Township, NJ passed away on Friday, January 4, 2013 at his home.
Born July, 3, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY, Frederick was a long time resident of Holland Township. Frederick served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of WWII. He survived the sinking of the U.S.S. Woods and was awarded commendation for gallant devotion to duty for manning his battle station for more than two hours after the ship was torpedoed. Frederick worked at the Riegel Paper Corp. in Milford, NJ and then later as a custodian and bus driver for Holland Township School for many years, before retiring in 1982.
Fredrick was a man with a great sense of humor. He was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather.
Son of the late Charles and Anna (O'Donnell) Shire, Frederick is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy (Wismer) Shire, with whom he just celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on January 2, 2013, his two daughters Patsy Sassaman and her husband Darwin "Bones" of Holland Township, NJ and Kay Levin of West Dennis, MA, four grandchildren David Sassaman, Tangee Sassaman, Scott Levin and Eric Levin and six great grandchildren, Jacob, Briana, Cheyenne, Collin, Moira and Ava. Frederick was predeceased by his two sisters Anna Licausi and Mary Silva and his brother Jeff Shire.
Funeral Services will be private. Arrangements are under the care of the Johnson-Walton Funeral Home, Milford, NJ.
