Mahlon H. Smith, III of Alexandria Township passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 27, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born March 5, 1939 in Brooklyn, New York, to Mahlon Smith, Jr. and Irma Wegener, Mahlon spent his early years moving with his father’s Methodist congregations across northern New Jersey, including Sparta—his birth home—Haledon, Newark, and Paramus. He and his wife later settled in Alexandria Township, where they raised their family and made their home for 47 years.
Mahlon earned a B.A. from Rutgers University, a Bachelor of Divinity from Drew University, and a post-doctoral M.S.L. (Medieval Studies Licentiate), magna cum laude, from the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies in Toronto, Canada. His studies also took him to Israel, Belgium, Germany, and Rome, where he attended the opening of the Second Vatican Council as an ecumenical guest.
Ordained as Methodist clergy by the New Jersey Conference of the United Methodist Church, Mahlon carried his lifelong commitment to thoughtful, compassionate inquiry into a nearly 40-year teaching career at Rutgers University, where he helped found the Department of Religion and was named Professor Emeritus in 2008.
A respected scholar of early Christianity, Mahlon was a Charter Fellow of the Westar Institute and the Jesus Seminar, serving as program chair. He contributed to major works including The Five Gospels, The Complete Gospels, and The Acts of Jesus, authored numerous articles and presentations, and pioneered early digital humanities through the creation of online resources such as the Virtual Religion Index, Into His Own, and A Synoptic Gospels Primer, making biblical studies widely accessible.
Mahlon was known for his gentle spirit, steady optimism, and kindness. He treasured thoughtful conversations, quiet reflection, observing nature, and the joy of his family. His curiosity, humor, and calm presence enriched every classroom, conversation, and community he touched.
He is survived by his wife, Katalin Luczay-Smith; daughters Renata Nelson and her husband Scott of Vienna, Austria and Tamara Upton and her husband Michael of Basking Ridge, NJ; son Michael Ingardia and his wife Lisa of Johns Creek, Georgia; sister Jennifer Walker of Naples, Florida; and five beloved grandchildren.
The family will receive relatives and friends for a visitation on Sunday, December 7, 2025, from 1:30–2:30 PM at the Johnson-Walton Funeral Home, 24 Church Road, Milford–Holland Township, NJ 08848.
