Maurine Speake, 97, of Deerfield Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Country Meadows of Forks Assisted Living Facility in Easton, PA on Friday January 24, 2025.
Maurine June Humbert was born on June 17, 1927, in Kankakee, Illinois to Rachael and Alexander Humbert. She was the second youngest of five siblings Al, Lou, Virginia, Yvonne and Ray. The young family moved to Holland Michigan in the 1930’s. Maurine graduated from Holland High School where she participated as a cheerleader. Maurine also worked at a local ice cream shop where she met and eventually married proprietor Thomas Speake.
Tom and Maurine raised four children in Holland - Jeffrey, Susan, James and Linda. In the 1960’s Tom sold the business, and the family moved to the warmer climate of South Florida where they would eventually retire.
Maurine was a proud and loving mother to her four children and spent most of her life raising her children and being a homemaker. She also worked as a ballet teacher and was a nursery schoolteacher. Maurine loved to play tennis, enjoyed dancing, and going to the beach. She loved children, always put other people’s wishes first, and was a truly happy person to follow.
In retirement Tom and Maurine were avid tennis players and had many friends at the local tennis court. A favorite after-tennis brunch spot was Marlee’s Diner, where they enjoyed meals with friends. After Tom’s passing, the friendly staff and friends at Marlee’s, Debbie, Eleanor and Gaby, became loving caregivers and helped Maurine to live independently into her 90’s. Recently, Maurine moved to Country Meadows in Easton, which is near her daughter Linda, who would visit mom regularly and provide diligent loving care.
Maurine is predeceased by her loving husband Thomas Speake and her five siblings. She is survived by her children: James Speake of Kyles Ford, TN, Susan Hill and her husband Al of Kyles Ford, TN, Linda Speake and her husband Michael of Milford, NJ, Jeffrey Speake and his wife Kathy of Denver, CO, and grandson Jake Speake of Denver, CO.
Services will be private due to Maurine’s final wishes. Arrangements are under the care of Johnson-Walton Funeral Home, 24 Church Road, Milford, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090.
