Stephen D Ombalski, 83, of Easton, PA, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2024, at his home.
He was born on May 19, 1941, in Newark, NJ, to the late Helen and Stephen Ombalski. On August 4, 1964, he married Juanita (Sherrill) Ombalski in Rolla, MO. She preceded him in death on June 25, 2005.
Steve grew up in Linden, NJ and through the ROTC program, attended college in Rolla, MO. He was a Sigma Nu brother, played four years of football, earned an engineering degree, and perhaps most importantly, met and married his wife, Juanita (Nita). He then served in the Army as a topographic engineer at Fort Belvoir and Army Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. After his service, he worked for Schiavone Construction building highways and runways in and around Newark Airport. In 1974 the family moved to Hunterdon County, NJ, where Steve started his own business. Steve founded and ran Ombalski Consulting Engineers for 30 years before pseudo-retiring in 2013. He was City Engineer for Plainfield in the late 80s and a longtime member of the Rolling Hills Chapter of the NJ Society of Professional Land Surveyors, where he instituted the Chapter’s Scholarship Fund. He was a lifelong member of Knights of Columbus and supporter of St Edwards (Milford, NJ) and St Lawrences (Riegelsville, PA) catholic churches. Steve was never afraid to try new things, whether leaving urban Newark for school in rural Rolla, MO, or moving to the country, buying a farm with horses, cows, chickens, all the while running his engineering business. Almost nothing could stop him, except perhaps Nita. He was proud of his family, his Polish heritage, and loved nothing more than spending time with them, mostly while working on endless home projects but also traveling with them to visit life-long friends, Rolla, the Jersey Shore or the Outer Banks. He was a dedicated friend, husband and father and will be missed.
He is survived by his children, Katrina Rossman and her husband, Keith, of Beaufort, SC, Gregory and his wife, Christine of Chester, NJ, Daniel and his wife Christina of Boalsburg, PA, and Mary Bidwell and her husband, Tim, of Hellertown; five grandchildren, Cassandra and Jacob Tinsman; Carter and Juliet Bidwell, and Tristen Ombalski, seven great grandchildren and by his sister, Donna (Ombalski) Berry.
The family will receive relatives and friends for a visitation on Thursday, September 26, 2024 from 6-8 PM at the Johnson-Walton Funeral Home, 24 Church Road, Holland Township, NJ. A visitation will also be held on Friday from 9:30-10:30 AM at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM at St. Edward the Confessor R.C. Church, 61 Mill Street, Milford, NJ. Interment, with military honors, will follow at the Milford Union Cemetery in Milford, NJ.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284.
